The Wolfpack from West High School in Tracy are 1-3 so far this year but they’re coming to Sonora with momentum from their first win of 2019, a 27-0 shutout of Ceres High School last week on Friday the 13th.

Sonora has had less luck this season. The Wildcats are 0-4 and waiting for their first win of the year. Friday night at Dunlavy Field the Sonora varsity football team will have their chance to go out and earn it.

Before their victory last week over Ceres, West lost 37-7 at Kimball on Sept. 6, 32-14 to Enochs in Tracy on Aug. 30, and 30-7 at Atwater on Aug. 23. Over the past 10 years, from 2018 back to 2009, the West Wolfpack have recorded one winning season, in 2011 when they went 6-5 and 4-1 in league play.

West coach Steven Wichman led the Wolfpack to 3-7 and 1-9 records in 2018 and 2017. Before Wichman took over, losing seasons for West High School included 0-10 in 2016, 1-9 in 2013 and 1-9 in 2012.

The navy-and-gold Wolfpack will be bringing more players than Sonora if online rosters for both teams are close to accurate. Nevertheless, on paper, the team from West High School appears significantly weaker than the four powerhouse teams Sonora has played so far this season.

Sonora had their chances last week against defending state 6-AA champion Hilmar. The Wildcats successfully defended their own goal line and took the ball away from Hilmar before giving up the first score of the game in the first quarter, then tied it 7-7 early in the second quarter.

But the Wildcats ultimately lost 7-28 last Friday to Hilmar. They also lost 13-35 at Escalon the week before, 14-55 at Ripon on Aug. 30, and 7-41 to Oakdale at home on Aug. 23.

West High School plays in the Tri-City Athletic League. This is a non-league Sac-Joaquin Section game for both West and Sonora. Sonora is scheduled to begin Mother Lode League play when they go up against Argonaut in Jackson on Oct. 4.

West High School at Sonora is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. Friday at Dunlavy Field. Dunlavy Field and Sonora High School are at 430 N. Washington St. in Sonora.
