The Sonora High School girls basketball team started their Mother Lode League season with plenty of drama.

Tuesday night the Wildcats rallied for a 52-51 overtime win over Calaveras.

“It was huge for us to go to their place, the first game of league and come away with a victory,” said head coach Amy Emerald.

Coming up big for Sonora was senior Shanece Garrett who had a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds. She added four steals.

Sophomore Jacey Hawkins had 11 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Jessica Berry had seven points, 11 rebounds and five blocks.

“It was a very good, intense back and forth game throughout,” said Emerald.

Helping to push the ‘Cats to the win were a few preseason one-point losses, said Emerald.

“We held our composure when we needed to,” she said. “We made a statement and I couldn’t be more proud of the girls.”

The team will have a week to prepare for their next league game.

Next Tuesday they’ll host Argonaut. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. The Mustangs were 11-5 in preseason play. They won their first MLL game against Summerville, 65-44.

They’ll play Calaveras Friday.
