The Sonora High School girls varsity basketball team will take a strong - and deep - roster on the road next week as the CIF Sac Joaquin section championships get underway.

The Wildcats had hoped for a home game to start their title quest, but they’ll play at El Dorado High School Tuesday, Feb. 20.

Sonora is seeded No.9 and El Dorado is No. 8.

Missing from the Division IV brackets is Mother Lode League winner Argonaut. They’ll play in the Division V grouping and start their playoffs at home with a No. 2 seed.

The Wildcats finished their season with a hefty win over Linden, 69-35.

The team honored seniors Haylie Santos and Caitlin Baker before the game. And they went out and played another strong game. Baker led the way on scoring with 17 points.

“She continued her all around great play with not only leading the score column, but she also had nine rebounds, four steals and three assists to go with it,” said coach Amy Emerald.

Santos was No. 2 in scoring with 13 points. She also had four assists.

“She was great on defense with seven steals,” said Emerald.

The ‘Cats bench continues to impress, too.

“We got scoring contributions from everyone on the team, including freshman call up Shekinah Calindas,” said Emerald.

Calindas contributed five points.

Also scoring for Sonora were Jessica Berry with nine points and 10 rebounds; Riley Hessler with seven points and seven rebounds; Shanece Garrett added seven points, seven steals and five assists; Jacey Hawkins scored five points and had eight rebounds; and Angellina Ray had four points and six rebounds.

Tuesday’s playoff game begins at 7 p.m.
