The Sonora High School varsity girls basketball team is off to a 2-0 start to Mother Lode League play after beating cross-town rival Summerville Friday, 49-31.
Despite a roster that’s been riddled with injuries and illness, head coach Amy Emerald said her team has repeatedly stepped up and persevered.
Friday’s game was a perfect example.
“It was a really good win for us,” Emerald said. “It’s always tough to play against your rival.”
The team included two freshmen, Jessica Berry who was called up earlier this season, and Jaycee Hawkins who go the call from Emerald Thursday night.
“Jessica started for us and she’s been great all season,” Emerald said.
Hawkins impressed as well.
“She stepped in and did a great job,” Emerald said. “She wasn’t timid at all.”
Because of league, Hawkins will remain with the varsity team because she played in a league game. That’s just find with Emerald.
“She’s going to be a great addition,” she said.
The Wildcats have one of their toughest weeks ahead of them with three league games on their schedule.
They play at Bret Harte (1-1) Monday night.
On Wednesday they’ll host Argonaut and Friday Calaveras is in town.
Those games are always tough, Emerald said. The three teams are often tangled at the top of the league rankings.
In addition to solid play from the freshman, Emerald also has two seniors, Haylie Santos and Caitlin Baker, who are playing well.
“Hailee has done really well for us,” Emerald said. “She’s one that hardly comes out of the game.”
Baker has battled with injury and illness, but remains a constant threat for the Wildcats.
Heading into the home stand, Emerald said the ‘Cats will take full advantage of the always-supportive fans.
“I think it’s going to be tough,” Emerald said. “My girls have stepped up when they needed to.”
