Four Mother Lode League football stars from Tuolumne and Calaveras counties were chosen recently to play in the 44th annual Central California Lions All-Star Football Game.
Sonora’s Bradly Canepa, Bret Harte’s Colin Preston and Calaveras’ Noah Preuss and Nick Quinday will represent the North squad at 7 p.m. June 17 when it squares off against the South at Tracy High School’s Wayne Schneider Stadium.
The game highlights some of the best recently-graduated high school seniors in the Sac-Joaquin Section.
Canepa is the two-time most valuable player in the MLL. The 5-foot-9, 240-pound hard-hitting linebacker/fullback helped lead the Wildcats to the division V Sac-Joaquin Section title in 2015 and finish the 2016 regular season undefeated.
Canepa rushed for 521 yards and nine touchdowns and led the Wildcats with 140 tackles, including 12 for loss.
Bret Harte’s Colin Preston was MLL lineman of the year in 2016. The 6-foot-5, 290-pounder helped lead the Bullfrogs to the playoffs for the first time in almost a decade.
Preston led the Bullfrogs with six tackles for loss, three sacks and four fumbles recovered.
Preuss, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound running back/safety rushed for over 1,200 yards and 18 touchdowns and team captain, 5-foot-10, 220-pound linebacker/offensive lineman, Nick Quinday were both first team All-MLL players.
