They fought hard to win the Mother Lode League this year and they won their first-round playoff match at home earlier this week, but the Sonora Wildcats varsity volleyball team’s season came to an end Thursday night as they were beaten by a bigger, stronger team in three sets by Central Catholic in Modesto.

Sonora was eliminated Thursday night in straight sets, 25-19, 25-13, and 25-20, but they battled back in each one.

“I’ve never had a team fight so hard to win the league,” Sonora head coach Amy Wahlbrink said after the defeat to Central Catholic. “That was the highlight of our season. Unfortunately this wasn’t our night.”

The Wildcats finished their regular season 20-7 overall and 13-2 in league play to win the Mother Lode League. They were seeded 7th in the Division III playoffs and defeated Manteca three sets to one in their first-round playoff Tuesday night in Bud Castle Gym.
