The Sonora freshmen boys basketball team returned to its winning ways Tuesday evening, beating Enochs of Modesto 53-39 in Bud Castle Gym at Sonora High School. The Wildcats are now 14-1 so far this season.

“It feels good to get back on our feet,” Joe Pimentel, the freshmen boys head coach, said after the game.

The Wildcats 9th graders lost their first game of the season last Friday to Lodi, 62-57. Pimentel said it was their first loss in 37 games. They were 13-0 for this season before the Lodi game. The Sonora freshmen boys went 24-0 last season to finish undefeated overall and as undefeated Mother Lode League champions.

Pimentel said three freshmen are being promoted to junior varsity. Tuesday was the last freshmen-level competition for point guard Chance Pimentel, shooting guard Jared Franklin, and center Roger Alderman.

“We’re losing three guys but it’s good for the program,” Joe Pimentel said. “We have more guys ready to step up and play.”

The Wildcats hit 7 of 14 three-point attempts Tuesday against Enochs. Chance Pimentel led Sonora scorers with 13 points, Reese Morlan scored 10, Jalen Davis scored 8, Franklin scored 7, Conrad Redwing scored 6, R.J. Arijaona scored 3, and Jacob Korte scored 2 points.

The Sonora freshmen are scheduled to play next at 4 p.m. Thursday at Ripon Christian in Ripon.

 

Varsity boys basketball

 

The Sonora varsity boys basketball team defeated Enochs, 72-42, later Tuesday at Sonora High School, to improve to 13-3 overall this season. They play next against Ripon Christian at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Ripon.

The Summerville varsity boys basketball team played Mariposa County in Tuolumne on Tuesday and lost 45-35. The Bears are 0-11 for the season so far. They are scheduled to open Mother Lode League play at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 14 against Argonaut in Jackson.

Also Tuesday, the Bret Harte Bullfrogs varsity boys basketball team defeated Golden Sierra 65-34 at Bret Harte in Angels Camp. The Bullfrogs improved to 8-8 overall and they are scheduled to play next at a time to be determined Friday against Oakdale at Bret Harte.

 

Varsity girls basketball

 

The Bret Harte varsity girls basketball team defeated Golden Sierra of Garden Valley 39-36 on Tuesday at Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp. The win improved the Bullfrogs to 5-9 so far this season. They are scheduled to play next at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 14 against Amador in Sutter Creek.

 

Also Tuesday, the Calaveras varsity girls basketball lost to Edison 74-38 at Edison High School in Stockton. The loss was the third in a row for the Calaveras varsity girls, who are now 9-4 overall so far this season. They host Lodi at 7 p.m. Friday at Calaveras High School in San Andreas.

 

Varsity girls soccer

 

The Sonora varsity girls soccer team defeated Amador 4-1 Tuesday in Sutter Creek. Amarys Machado scored 2 goals, and Megan Ronneburg and Brenna Canepa each scored one goal apiece.

The Bret Harte varsity girls soccer team defeated Argonaut 3-0 Tuesday at Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp. It was the fifth win in a row for the Bullfrogs, who are now 5-3 overall so far this season. They are scheduled to open Mother Lode League play against Sonora at 5:45 p.m. Jan. 16 in Angels Camp.

Also Tuesday, Summerville’s varsity girls played Calaveras in San Andreas. A final score was not available Wednesday.
