Sonora attacker Tyler Tipton scored a hat trick Tuesday night as the Wildcats varsity boys soccer team defeated Argonaut 3-2 at Dunlavy Field.
Right back Isaiah MacDonald assisted on the decisive, game-winning third goal, on a new play they designed in practice earlier this week, with a pass from the wing to center, where Tipton one-timed a shot to beat the Argonaut goalkeeper in the second half.
The win over Argonaut put Sonora in sole possession of first place in the Mother Lode League, according to online standings, ahead of Calaveras and Summerville.
The Sonora varsity girls soccer team also beat Argonaut, 6-0, on the road Tuesday in Jackson.
Wildcats junior midfielder Mikaela Patterson scored her own three-goal hat trick, and junior midfielder Sidney Rojas, sophomore attacker McKenna Alderman, and sophomore forward Gabrielle Frediani each scored one goal.
The Sonora varsity girls also took charge of first place in Mother Lode League standings, ahead of their closest rivals Summerville.
Also in varsity girls soccer, Calaveras defeated Amador 7-1 Tuesday in San Andreas, and Summerville beat Bret Harte 2-1 in Angels Camp.
The Sonora varsity boys basketball team beat Argonaut 76-36 on Tuesday night in Bud Castle Gym to remain undefeated in Mother Lode League play and improve to 17-3 overall so far this season.
Sonora scorers were Spencer Copello with 5 three-pointers and 16 points; Callahan Hanson shot 6-for-6 from the free throw line and added 12 points; Austin Patterson and Devon Dye scored 11 points each; Darius O’Neal and Jon Mayben scored 8 apiece; Cole Edwards added 4 points; and Ben White, Brian Maaliao, and Gabe Milbourn scored 2 each.
The Wildcats are 3-0 at the top of the Mother Lode League and tied with the Amador Buffaloes, who defeated Calaveras 67-66 on Tuesday in Sutter Creek.
Also in varsity boys basketball, Bret Harte defeated Summerville 44-42 on Tuesday at Summerville in Tuolumne.
In varsity girls basketball, Sonora lost to Argonaut 65-63 on Tuesday on the road in Jackson, while Calaveras crushed Amador 76-24 in Sutter Creek and Bret Harte beat Summerville 54-50 at Bret Harte in Angels Camp.
The results Tuesday night left Sonora, Calaveras, Bret Harte, and Argonaut in a four-way tie for the lead in Mother Lode League standings.
League basketball play continues for varsity boys and varsity girls Friday, when Sonora plays at Summerville, Calaveras plays at Bret Harte, and Amador plays at Argonaut.
