The Sonora varsity girls water polo team plays El Camino in a first-round playoff at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Sonora High School.
Sonora head coach Matt Personius said he believes this year's team may be the most experienced and talented he's had, strong in all positions.
“We have some of the best players in our section and lots of confidence heading into playoffs," he said. "We feel good about our chances in tomorrow’s game, and for that matter, we feel confident against anyone we will face going forward. We have put in the work, we’ve got fantastic kids who also happen to be excellent athletes, and are hoping for great things at the end of the season here.”
The team has won league championships for three years in a row, winning the Valley Oak League in 2017, and the Mother Lode League in 2018 and 2019. They were section runners up in 2016 and section champions in 2017 and 2018.
The Wildcats are 21-6 overall and 5-0 in Mother Lode League play so far this year, and they are two-time defending champions of CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division III.
The 2019 Sonora Wildcats are Liberty Wheeler, Emily Van Noord, Angel Zachary, McKynlie Suess, Ella Boone, Taylor Edwards, Kayla Landman, Megan Slater, Megan Ronenberg, Jessalee Culbertson, Brielle Estwin, Sofia Alomia, Brooke Thomas, Lilly Cimolino and Taetum Arnett.
The Sonora varsity boys water polo team has a first-round playoff game scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Friday. The third-seeded Sonora boys take on sixth-seeded Ripon at home.
