The varsity boys basketball team from Sonora High School, coming off a hard-earned CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV championship last season, are reloading for another run this winter and they expect opponents to be motivated.
They’re doing tryouts each afternoon this week and they have under three weeks to get ready for their first non-league game, Nov. 25 at home against Central Catholic of Modesto.
“We have an extremely tough schedule in the preseason,” Wildcats varsity head coach Lloyd Longeway said this week. “We are the defending Division 4 section champions so everyone will bring their best game against us.”
Longeway says he has six seniors returning, including Mother Lode League most valuable player Austin Patterson, and three juniors. They went 27-5 overall last year, 9-1 in league play, and Longeway says his two centers are taller this year.
Boys basketball Wildcats standout players include senior guard Ben Fray, senior point guard and captain Jonathen Mayben, senior guard and league MVP Patterson, senior forward Darius O’Neal, senior guard Logan Sewell, senior center Devon Dye, junior forward Cole Edwards, junior guard Brian Maliolio, junior center Gabe Milbourn, and sophomore guard Callahan Hanson, Longeway said.
