The Sonora girls varsity basketball team beat Turlock 49-35 on Thursday in the Crusader Classic Varsity Tournament at Modesto Christian School in Modesto.
Junior power forward Jessica Berry scored 25 points. Junior shooting guard Jacey Hawkins added 11 points, and junior point guard Shekinah Calindas scored 9 more.
Varsity head coach Greg Smith said several girls on the team were sick or injured this week. The players that suited up for Thursday’s game had limited backup from a short bench, and they deserve credit for playing well and coming away with a victory, Smith said.
Earlier this week, the Sonora boys varsity basketball team defeated Riverbank 81-69 on the road Tuesday at Riverbank in their first official game of the 2019-2020 season.

The win improved Sonora’s overall record to 1-0 so far this season.
