From the fireworks show at halftime to the 37 unanswered points through three quarters of play, the Summerville High School varsity football team put on a homecoming spectacle for the packed stands at Thorsted Field in Tuolumne on Friday night.

“We knew it was homecoming and just wanted to give people a show,” said Bears quarterback Jaden Brocchini in an interview after leading his team to a 37-6 win against the Delta Charter Dragons from Tracy.

The Bears first points came 50 seconds into the first quarter on a safety after a Dragons fumble on their own 20. Players on both teams battled to recover the ball, which went bouncing through the back of the Delta Charter end zone.

Summerville’s Titus Shirley returned the kickoff by Delta Charter to the Dragons’ 43, which set up the Bears’ first scoring drive on offense.

A carry for five yards by Summerville’s Nick Veach followed by a 32-yard pass from Brocchini to receiver Eliceo Avila brought the ball to the Delta Charter 5. Avila would run the ball in for a touchdown two plays later.

The point after kick by Summerville’s Ian Henley was good to give the Bears a 9-0 lead with 9:07 still remaining in the first quarter.

Delta Charter’s next drive came to a sudden end on third down when Brocchini picked off a pass by Dragons’ quarterback DJ Ramirez intended for a receiver downfield.

Summerville’s offense started the drive on the Delta Charter 36 and gained 16 yards on a couple of carries and a big pass from Brocchini to Shirley.

Brocchini ran for 17 yards on a keeper to bring the ball to the 3, before connecting with Shirley on a fade for another touchdown. Another successful point after brought Summerville’s lead to 16-0 with 5:47 remaining in the first quarter.

Delta Charter’s next drive was a three-and-out thanks to Summerville’s stingy defense, which set the stage for a third consecutive scoring drive by the Bears.

The Bears were driven back to third and long from their own 20 after a couple of penalties, but then a keeper by Brocchini and catch by Summerville’s Chase Ryan gave them a new set of downs.

A carry by Veach and two catches by Summerville’s Garrett Miller brought the ball to the Delta Charter 5. Brocchini ran for a touchdown 33 seconds into the second to give the Bears a 23-0 lead.

Delta Charter punted to Summerville after being unable to convert on third down, and the Bears started their next drive from their own 35. Veach looked destined for the end zone after breaking free, but was tripped up on the Delta 13 yard line.

The Bears took a 30-0 lead following a 13-yard touchdown pass from Brocchini to Shirley, followed by the point after kick by Henley, with six minutes remaining in the first half.

Summerville’s Connor Cawley came through with the final touchdown for the Bears about three minutes into the third quarter.

Delta Charter’s first and only touchdown came with about nine minutes left in the game on a 50-yard run by Dragons’ running back Jathen Cain.

“It (the win) will get us back on track,” said Miller.

The Bears now have a 2-3 record as they head into a bye week, followed by the start of Mother Lode League play on Oct. 4 against Calaveras at Calaveras High School.
