The Summerville High School varsity football team will try to unleash one of its best performances so far this year when they host the Delta Charter Dragons from Tracy to celebrate homecoming Friday night at Thorsted Field in Tuolumne.
The Dragons are less than three years old as a varsity football program, with 0-6 and 0-10 records in their first two seasons, and they’re 1-3 so far this year. They’ve lost 12-34 at home to Western Sierra Collegiate Academy of Rocklin, 8-33 at home against Bret Harte of Angels Camp, and 6-54 at home against Golden Sierra of Garden Valley.
Delta Charter’s first and only varsity football victory in their school’s history so far was on Aug. 31 when the Dragons beat Valley Christian 48-0 at home. This Friday’s game against Summerville is Delta Charter’s first road game of the 2019 season.
Dragons head coach Jeff Tilton said his team had low roster numbers, 19 to 20 active players, when his team faced Bret Harte on Sept. 7 outside Tracy. There are 21 players listed on an unofficial roster for Delta Charter this week.
Dragons junior running back Jathen Cain, number 2, was a constant speed threat for Delta Charter two weeks ago against Bret Harte. Senior quarterback Robert Cancilla, number 4, was also dangerous running the ball for the Dragons, and he was unafraid to throw deep.
Like their homecoming guests, the black-and-orange Bears of Tuolumne are 1-3 so far this year. Summerville’s most recent game resulted in a 0-30 road loss to the Hughson Huskies down in Stanislaus County. Before that they lost 13-36 against Ripon Christian in Ripon, came back to win 24-21 over Galt in Galt, and lost a nail-biter 24-30 at home to Mariposa County High School.
This is a non-league Sac-Joaquin Section game for both teams. Summerville begins Mother Lode League play Oct. 4 when they go to San Andreas to try to defeat Calaveras. In that game, Summerville will be the guests while Calaveras High School students, families and alumni celebrate homecoming.
The varsity game between Delta Charter and Summerville High School is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. at Thorsted Field. Summerville High School is at 17555 Tuolumne Road in Tuolumne.
