The Calaveras High School varsity football team takes an 0-1 overall record on the road Friday to play the Modesto Christian Crusaders at Roy Blakeley Field in Modesto.

Calaveras lost their first non-league game of the 2019 season last week, falling 24-7 to Escalon at home in San Andreas.

Calaveras coach Doug Clark and his team will hope they have a better chance of finding their first victory this year against the Crusaders, who have opened 2019 with heavy losses, 0-63 to Sierra on Aug. 23, and 0-62 to Edison on Aug. 30.

Clark is in his first year as Calaveras varsity head coach. He praised his team’s efforts Aug. 30 after the loss to favored Escalon at Frank Meyer Field. Keeping Calaveras varsity players properly hydrated will be a goal for Clark’s coaching staff this week. Cramping was an issue for several players during the loss to Escalon.

Calaveras players on offense who hope to see more of the ball this Friday night at Modesto Christian include senior back Jonny Lozano, junior receiver Jake Black, and junior receiver Clayton Moore.

The Crusaders, 0-2 overall in non-league competition, play in the Trans Valley League. A 2019 roster for the Modesto Christian varsity team shows 11 players. Modesto Christian coach Brett Butler and the school’s athletic director, Robb Spencer, could not be reached to comment for this report.

At least one Central Valley school, Florin High School in Sacramento, has had to cancel games this season due to low roster numbers, Will DeBoard, assistant commissioner with the Lodi-based California Interscholastic Federation Sac-Joaquin Section, said in an interview last week.

DeBoard said Thursday this week that Modesto Christian is one of several Sac-Joaquin Section schools with low roster numbers this year. He said the varsity team last had 18 to 19 players and the school has not canceled any games due to low roster numbers.

Modesto Christian is about 55 miles southwest of San Andreas. Roy Blakeley Field is at 5755 Sisk Road in Modesto.
