The Delta Charter Dragons are less than three years old as a varsity football program, with 0-6 and 0-10 records in their first two seasons. So they could be ideal opponents for the short-handed Bret Harte Bullfrogs of Angels Camp, when the two teams meet at 11 a.m. Saturday at Delta Charter’s new sports complex in Tracy.

The Bullfrogs still have fewer than 20 players on their roster but they are stoked for the chance to play again. Bret Harte had 16 players for their first varsity game of the 2019 season -- a 49-7 loss to Orestimba on Aug. 17 -- but three players were caught vaping last week and put on probation, the head coach said. Last week Bret Harte had a bye week, and this Saturday they hope to have 16 players, including three sophomores, to take on Delta Charter.

Bret Harte coaches and players may go into their Saturday game with respect for Delta Charter, because the Dragons earned their first victory in their varsity program’s short history on Aug. 31, defeating Valley Christian of Roseville, 48-0.

The Dragons scored more points in their most recent game than in all the games they played in their first two seasons. They dominated early, scoring four touchdowns in the first quarter and they led 34-0 at halftime.

Delta Charter are 1-1 for the 2019 season so far. They lost 34-12 to Western Sierra Collegiate Academy in Rocklin on Aug. 23.

Bullfrogs coach Casey Kester said last week the three players on probation are expected to return after the Sept. 13 home game against El Dorado.

Kester said he believes the minimum number he needs to field a team for 11-on-11 high school varsity tackle football is 16 or 17 players. Bret Harte is 0-1 so far this season, with Mother Lode League play beginning in October.

Delta Charter is about a 75-mile drive from Bret Harte High, at 31400 S. Koster Road on the outskirts of Tracy, the second-most populated city in San Joaquin County with 90,000 people. The school’s new Delta Charter Sports Complex is at 31199 S. Koster Road.
