A Sonora High School graduate who is trying to break into the National Football League with the Houston Texans was placed on the active/non-football injury list on Sunday, and the head coach said Friday he wants the former Wildcat back soon because the Texans need him.
Kahale Warring, who accepted his Sonora High diploma in June 2015, is a top tight end prospect with Houston, AFC South division winners in 2018, 2016, and 2015.
Warring was placed on the active/non-football injury list Sunday, the check-in day for this summer’s Texans training camp in Houston, for an unspecified muscle strain he picked up in pre-camp workouts on his own, according to Texans coach Bill O'Brien.
O’Brien praised the 22-year-old Mother Lode native and said he and his staff think Warring has “a really good future” in the NFL.
“I hope he gets back out here soon because we need him out here,” O’Brien told the Houston Chronicle on Friday. “We want to keep developing him. We think he's got a really good future. These guys, especially young players away from us for a while, they're doing the best they can. They're working out. They're on their own. He's a young player and he's working hard and he just came up with a little strain. I think he'll be back soon."
Warring, a seven-sport star for the Wildcats who started playing football his senior year at Sonora High, played 19 games at San Diego State and started five before declaring for the 2019 NFL draft.
In late February and early March, he ranked among the top five tight ends in four out of seven scored events at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
In April, the Texans picked Warring 86th overall in Round 3 of the draft, and signed him in early June to a four-year contract through 2022. Warring is 6 feet 5 inches tall, 252 pounds, with 4.67-second speed in the 40-yard dash.
“He brings a lot,” Texans tight ends coach Will Lawing told the Houston Chronicle. “He’s very athletic and learning a lot. New to the game of football, but I really like what I see from him so far. He’s doing a good job.”
