The Sonora High School girls basketball team took on a strong Argonaut team, picking up a decisive 62-47 win in league play Tuesday night.
The victory moved them to 3-0 in Mother Lode League play and 12-5 overall.
“It was a great game for us,” said head coach Amy Emerald. “We know they play super aggressive, full-court defense and we worked a lot on taking care of the ball.”
Sonora took control from the start with an 18-11 first quarter run. They took a 37-31 lead into the half and came out strong in the second to seal the win.
“We did a much better job in the second half on that and it showed it the score,” said Emerald.
Argonaut came into the game 1-1 in MLL play and a 13-6 overall record.
The Mustangs have a strong team this year, said Emerald.
“Argonaut is a team that will definitely be in the hunt for league so this was a great win,” she said.
Senior Shanece Garrett led scoring with 29 points.
She also had eight rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocks.
Sophomore Jessica Berry had 14 points, five rebounds and three blocks.
Senior Emily Berry had five points and a strong night under the net with her 11 rebounds.
Junior Riley Hessler had five points and three assists.
Junior Ainslee Shuemake had eight rebounds.
Sophomore Jacey Hawkins had seven rebounds.
The Wildcats’ second league win came against Bret Harte, 58-44. Hessler led scorers with 15 points.
Shuemake had 12 points and senior Shanece Garrett added 10 points.
Next up for Sonora is Summerville (0-3, 2-10) .
They’ll host the Bears Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Bud Castle Gym.
