The Sonora High School girls basketball team will head into Mother Lode League play with a new trophy and plenty of momentum.

The Wildcats placed first in the annual Pitman Basketball Tournament after three wins.

In Round 1 action the ‘Cats took down Hughson, 49-32. Jessica Berry had a double-double, picking up 19 points and 12 rebounds. Ainslee Shuemake had 16 points and Jacey Hawkins had five rebounds and four assists.

In the second round Sonora beat Lodi 66-57. Shanece Garrett notched a double-double with 27 points and 15 rebounds. She also had three assists. Jessica Berry had 16 points and 6 rebounds. Ainslee Shuemake had nine points and nine rebounds. Jacey Hawkins had seven points and 10 rebounds. Riley Hessler had seven points, seven rebounds and four assists.

In the championship game the Wildcats faced host school Pitman, cruising to a 67-57 victory.

Shanece Garrett had a triple-double, putting up 22 points, 14 rebounds, 10 steals and four assists. Jessica Berry added to her tournament totals with another double double on 16 points and 11 rebounds. Riley Hessler had 15 points. Jacey Hawkins had six rebounds and four assists.

In addition to the first place finish, Shanece Garrett won tournament MVP.

Jessica Berry was awarded All-Tournament Player.

Next up for the Wildcats is their first MLL matchup.

They’ll be on the road at Calaveras Tuesday, Jan. 8. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.
