The California Youth Shooting Sports Association held its two-day State Championship over the weekend at the Coon Creek Trap and Skeet Club.

More than 170 shooters dealt with wind and high-90s temperatures.

In the Rookie division, Mother Lode Gun Club Nuggets Joseph Long, Jace Jones and Everett Taylor took third place as a team. Long led his squad with a score of 176 out of 200, good for fourth place individually.

The Intermediate Entry Level division saw Nugget Payton Wearin tie for third place with Nic Fry of Los Banos after hitting 187 targets.

Wearin would go on to defeat Fry in their shoot-off, 25 to 24, to secure third.

Teammate Dylan Kappl was right behind him with a 186, and along with Joshua Reese, Derrick Kroeze and Payton Wearin took second place as a team.

In the Intermediate Advanced division, the team of Carson Cooper, Cooper Hildebrand, McKenna Alderman, Corey Ketchum and Clayton Ryan finished in sixth place as a team. Ryan led the squad with his score of 192 out of 200.

For the High Five category, which counts the top five shooters across all divisions, Mother Lode Gun Club took third place.

The combined score of 921 out of 1000 from Clayton Ryan, Cooper Hildebrand, Dylan Kappl, Payton Wearin and Joseph Long was only two targets out of second place.
