Sonora’s girls varsity basketball team was a stellar 72 percent from the freethrow line Friday night on their way to a win over crosstown rival Summerville, 61-57.
“We didn’t necessarily start slow, but we came out and played much better in the second half,” said Wildcat coach Amy Emerald. “We played with more urgency and intensity. In the first half, we didn’t get to the 50/50 balls like we should and let rebounds hit the floor.”
The win gives the Wildcats a 9-2 record in Mother Lode League play.
They sit solidly in second place behind Argonaut and ahead of Summerville.
Haylie Santos had 15 points. Shanece Garrett had 14 points, nine rebounds and four steals.
Caitlin Baker had 13 points and nine rebounds.
“Caitlin played a great game. She was very solid all the way around,” said Emerald.
Freshman Jessica Berry had eight points and 10 rebounds.
And Ainslee Shuemake added seven points.
“We showed our character and heart when we needed to close out,” said Emerald.
The Wildcats play at home tonight against Linden High School (0-11).
The game starts at 7:30 p.m. at Bud Castle Gym.
