It’s been 12 years since the Sonora High School boys varsity basketball team has clinched a Mother Lode League title. This year they did it with an exclamation point — an undefeated season heading into their final league game.

Fittingly, Friday night was senior night, too, as the ‘Cats fought their way by their crosstown rivals Summerville for a 76-66 victory.

As is usually the case, records don’t matter heading into the annual matchup said Sonora coach Lloyd Longeway. When the teams meet, it’s invariably anybody’s game. And so it went this year.

As is usually the case, records don’t matter heading into the annual matchup said Sonora coach Lloyd Longeway. When the teams meet, it’s invariably anybody’s game. And so it went this year.

“It was a good game,” said Longeway. “Summerville played us really tough.”

The ‘Cats were up 42-36 at the half, and the Bears kept it fairly close until Sonora found some separation as the third quarter ended.

“They (Summerville) did a good job of getting the ball inside,” said Longeway.

Sonora honored seniors Damian Kress, Joe Thomason, Jace Decker, Rico Sanchez, Mitchell Camacho, Jacob Storm and Colton Pimentel pregame.

“It was a pretty cool night,” said Longeway, including a post-game net-cutting to celebrate. “We had a lot of guys get a chance to get in there which was really cool.”

Jace Decker was the team’s leading scorer with 27. Jacob Storm had 15 points and eight rebounds. Rico Sanchez had 12 points and Damian Kress had nine points and five rebounds.

Tonight the ‘Cats will play on the road at Linden High School (1-10). The final league game of the season starts at 7:30 p.m.

Mother Lode League playoffs are set to begin Friday and Sonora will have home court advantage. Brackets will be released later this week.
