Despite a strong start Friday night, the Summerville Bears’ girls varsity basketball team lost to Argonaut, 54-41.

“We came out well and led by 2 at the half,” said head coach Greg Smith. “Our starters raced out to an early lead and our defense was stout early, holding them to six points in the first quarter.”

Then Argonaut turned on the heat. They hit four three-pointers in the second half, said Smith. And stopping Argonaut senior Macey Arevalo proved tough, said Smith.

“There was nothing we could do to stop her. She finished with 28 points despite double teams and fouls, and we gave her too many and-ones.”

The win for Argonaut moved them to 8-1 in league and in the No. 2 spot ahead of Sonora. Summerville is now 5-3. Summerville senior Grace Fulkerson played a terrific game, said Smith. She had 18 points and several blocks and important rebounds.

“We handled their pressure much better than last time and competed really hard, but we found ourselves down and needing to foul late,” Smith said.

Argonaut then went nine of 10 from the line as the Bears were forced to foul in order to stop the clock.

The good news is Summerville remains in third place in league. And they’ve got a chance to pick up a win tonight at Linden. The game begins at 7:30 p.m.
