The Sonora High School varsity boys basketball team is firmly at the top of the Mother Lode League standings after their strong 72-43 Tuesday road win at Amador.

The Wildcats are now 7-0.

They'll play Friday night at Bret Harte (1-5).

The game begins at 7:30 p.m.

Their closest competitor in the MLL? The 6-1 Argonaut Mustangs.

Tuesday’s win came thanks to a big third quarter performance, said coach Lloyd Longeway.

The ‘Cats were up 11 at the half, 36-25 before hitting the gas.

“We came out after halftime and ramped up our defensive intensity. Austin Patterson got going offensively,” said Longeway. “From there we never looked back.”

In first half play, Damien Kress dropped two three pointers to give the ‘Cats some early energy, Longeway said. Kress ended up with 16 points on the night. Also in double digits for Sonora was Jacob Storm with 15.
