Sonora swept Linden on the tennis courts 9-0 Wednesday and is pursuing one of the three playoff spots from the Mother Lode League.

The Wildcats dominated the Lions in singles and earned a couple of narrow victories in doubles to push their league record to 6-3.

Sonora will make up a match against Bret Harte at 3:30 p.m. today in Angels Camp and travel to Sutter Creek Friday to play Amador.

Jake Evans and Thomas Johnson at boys No. 1 and 2 singles lost a combined five games in straight set wins.

And girls No. 1 and 2 singles Savannah McClintock and Haley Fiedler also lost a combined five games in straight set victories.

“It was nice to see our best players dominate theirs,” said Wildcat head coach Sam Segerstrom. “Jake and Thomas had to be more aggressive and hit winners because they were playing against solid opponents who didn’t make mistakes.”

The two closest matches came in boys doubles.

The No. 1 team of Zach Whitmer and Ian Smith won 6-4, 4-6, (10-7) in a competitive match where frustrations nearly boiled over. Both teams felt there were questionable line calls and one player from each squad were brought in after their matches to cover the lines and settle calls if there were disputes.

Christian Froehlich and Jackson Bouchard also won with a nearly identical score of 7-5, 3-6 (10-7).

“Zach and Ian did good to keep their focus after losing that second set and being frustrated,” Segerstrom said.
