Short-handed Calaveras soccer falls to Linden

The Calaveras boys’ soccer team lost its Mother Lode League opener Thursday night on the road at Linden 5-2. Calaveras was without three starters and had only three subs off the bench.

“A tough opener for us,” said Calaveras head coach Rob Leetham. “Not playing a game in quite awhile hurt us. Playing Linden, on the road is never easy and add in the fact that the field was a mud bowl didn’t help either. Still, despite missing three starters our guys played well in the first half. Linden’s deep bench really wore us down in the second half though.”

Linden took an early 1-0 lead, but Calaveras tied the game with a goal from Kyle Alfred with an assist from Andrew Celli.

The Lions responded with their second goal of the night, but Calaveras answered with Mateo Alliende knocking in a rebound off of a Kenyon Stone free kick.

Linden scored once more before the end of the first half and added two more second half goals.

“Our guys never quit and I love that about this team,” Leetham said. “Kyle Alfred filled in for Alberto (Da Ros) at center mid and did a nice job. We are looking forward to playing them again under better conditions and our full team back together again.”

Calaveras (2-5, 0-1 MLL) plays it league home opener against Summerville Tuesday at Frank Meyer Field in San Andreas.
