Teacher’s strike

To the Editor:

Regarding the threatened teachers strike. Sometimes we forget that threatening harm, such as a strike, is a form of extortion which is defined as: “The obtaining of property from another induced by wrongful use of actual or threatened force, violence, or fear, or under color of official right.”

In this case, the victim seems to be the taxpayer. How many parents would want their children taught by a teacher who condoned extortion?

If we would again teach civics in the schools, both teachers and students could learn that the fundamental law in society is to keep your agreements and respect the rights of others. From this comes common law and sometimes political law.

Our Constitution, with great wisdom, defines human rights as “life, liberty and property.”

Perhaps our founding fathers in creating our Constitution discovered for the first time in human history the perfect blend of morality and historical wisdom.

Bottom line, if you do not agree with your employer and can not resolve the issues, you should find work elsewhere — but never resort to extortion.

Don’t blame the DNC

To the Editor:

This letter (“Hatred and anarchy,” Oct. 3) states that the DNC is spreading hatred and violence. It also states that the people want what Trump promised. Trump is willing to settle for much less. On health care, he promised to replace Obamacare with something better that insures more. After seeing the GOP’s first try, he said he never knew health care was so complicated. The GOP plan was much worse and took insurance away from 20 million people. After saying it was mean, he came out in favor of it anyway.

The GOP is now working on a tax bill. Trump said no tax cut for the rich — only cuts for the middle class. His first plan is half tax cuts for the rich. Some middle class get nothing. The rest are lucky to get $1,000.

If you want a nuclear war with North Korea, if you want increasing extreme weather, if you want tax cuts for big businesses who are actually firing people, keep favoring Trump. Don’t blame the DNC. So far his own party can’t pass anything. Hopefully this will continue because everything he is trying to do so far is bad for the country.

Does anyone think Trump is a good moral leader? I doubt it.
