Velma B. (Schrein) Knigge of Sonora was born Jan. 26, 1916, in Crete, Nebraska, second child of the Rev. and Mrs. A.F. Schrein. She was called home to her Lord July 6, 2019, from Oakdale.

Velma was raised and attended schools through college in Crete, Nebraska. She taught at multiple schools in Nebraska and California for 57 years. Married to Walter Knigge, a school principal and administrator, they raised two children. Velma was an accomplished lady who earned two master’s degrees, founded and served as president of her church congregation women's service group and represented that group both nationally and internationally. Velma enjoyed music and played piano and sang with various choral groups. She and her husband traveled throughout North America, the British Isles, western Europe and the Mediterranean.

A lifelong Lutheran, Velma was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Sonora, for more than 30 years.

Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, daughter Nancy (Knigge) Bruce, her parents and three siblings.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Dorothy Knigge; granddaughters Jennifer Grabowski, Allison Jones and Rebecca Vera and their spouses; and seven great-grandchildren, all of whom reside in Tuolumne County.

Private graveside service and reception will be held at a future date.
