Candy was a true California girl, born in Stockton and raised in Santa Cruz and Aptos. She lived life with the sand in her toes and the sea breeze in her hair. Even though she had lived in Sonora for the last 16 years, the first thing she wanted to do when we went down to the coast was to take a walk on the beach.
Candy moved to the Sonora area after she retired from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office. She served that office proudly as a Record’s Clerk for 28 years. Candy couldn’t stay idle, though. Over those 16 years, she worked for Sierra Bible Church, Gold Rush Charter School, and the Area 12 Agency on Aging, before finally settling in at H&R Block, where she worked for several years as a receptionist.
Her heart knew no depth too deep for those she loved. For those of you who didn’t know her, she was kind, generous, brave and one of the most loving and thoughtful people you could ever meet. Candy had a sarcastic, sassy sense of humor and loved to laugh, making others laugh just as hard in the process. She had a strong, courageous and willful spirit, although she would never believe you if you told her that. She fought a long, hard and painful battle over the last two years to stay with us in this life, but it was her time to fly away home.
Candy is survived by her daughter, Kacy Engelund; her sister, Barbara Morley; her brother, John Engelund; her nieces Roxanne Carlson and Jessie LaRue; her nephews Cash Colyear, Dan Engelund and John Engelund, and their respective families.
She won’t be alone in the arms of Jesus. Her beloved sister, Cindy Carlson, her mother, Marie Engelund, her father, Andy Engelund, and her late husband, Don Scribner, were all waiting for her to guide her home.
There will be no formal service. Instead, Candy wanted a celebration of life for her close family and friends, which will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please make a generous donation to either Sonora Cat Rescue or the Tuolumne County Humane Society. These were both causes that Candy felt passionate about due to her love for cats and all other furry or feathered creatures.
