Arthur “Art” David Valponi, 92, of Sonora, passed away, Monday, Feb 26, 2018, at Meadow View Manor in Sonora. Art was born Oct. 16, 1926, in San Francisco, California, while his mother was visiting there.

Art was a fifth-generation descendant of the McCauly family, pre-Gold Rush pioneers of Tuolumne County. He was a Sonora High School graduate, World War II Navy veteran of the Pacific Theater, and had a 20-year career at Pickering Lumber Company and then 30 years with Tuolumne County Road Department. He was an avid fly fisherman and loved baseball, especially the San Francisco Giants.

Art is survived by two children, Robert and Vicky; his brother, Bob, and wife Mary Valponi; his companion, Mildred Montgomery, and her children, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Alice; and his parents, Catherine and Louis Valponi.
At his request, there will be no services.
