At 96 years of age, Mary Ellen Workman was called home by her Lord on Jan. 29, 2018.
Mary Ellen grew up in McCloud, California, and majored in English at UC Berkeley. She served her country in the WAVES (part of the U.S. Navy) during World War II. She met George Workman while working at Dun and Bradstreet in Los Angeles, and they married in 1951. She had a full career as a bookkeeper for numerous businesses, including the family business, Aero Info Inc. She and George moved to Jamestown in 1980, and Mary Ellen moved to Columbia in 2002.
Mary Ellen loved people and was active in numerous church, philanthropic and social groups. These included numerous bridge clubs, the Church of the 49ers Finance Committee and Presbyterian Women, square dance clubs, P.E.O. International Women's Organization, Aronos Club and the Red Hat Society.
She will be greatly missed by her son, Scot; her daughter, Kimberly Schlumberger (Steve); her granddaughter, Ashley Raggio (James); and great-grandsons, Matt, Ryan and Joey. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling the arrangements.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Church of the 49ers in Columbia, followed by a reception celebrating this much-loved and wonderful woman.
