Ronald Eugene Stearn passed away on Feb. 6, 2018, at his daughter’s home in Fairfax, California. Ron was born July 22, 1928, in Oakland, California. He lived in Sonora for 75 years. He graduated from Sonora High, went to college at Modesto JC and Cal Poly. Ron met his wife, Lorraine Lavagnino, in high school and they were happily married until she died in 1988. He missed her these past 29 ½ years.
Ron served in the National Guard and belonged to Rotary, Boy Scouts, Masonic Order and E. Clampus Vitus. He managed Mundorf’s Hardware Store for 47 years. He was a member of the Sonora Methodist Church.
Ron lived life to the fullest and was well regarded by all. A man of integrity, always willing to help and gave himself to the City of Sonora, serving for 52 years, five times as mayor; he retired from the City Council in July 2016.
He was loved by many, especially his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. The last one-and-a-half years were spent with his daughter in Fairfax, making monthly visits to Sonora to see friends and his home. He was able to make a desired trip to Wyoming last September. He met a new circle of friends in San Rafael, at Jackson Cafe for lunches and at his son-in-law’s church in San Rafael. He kept active relationships with friends in Sonora with phone calls, detailing his outings in Marlin County and frequenting soccer, basketball and baseball games of great-grandchildren. Ron dedicated his life serving the people of Sonora.
He is survived by his son, Kenneth, and his wife, Debra, of Salt Lake City, Utah; daughters, Martha Nelken and husband, Will, of Fairfax, and Laura van den Berg and husband, Luuk, of Nevada City; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Ron was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lorraine.
A private family graveside service was held on Friday, Feb. 9. A public celebration will take place at 2 p.m. March 10 at the Opera Hall
