Janice Marie Higgins, 91, passed away Nov. 19 in Sonora, California.

Janice was born in Detroit on Jan. 28, 1926. Jan moved with her family to Los Angeles during the Depression. She attended Dorsey High School, where she excelled at mathematics. In 1944 she married Thomas Higgins. They settled in East Los Angeles, where Tom had a dental practice and Jan worked as a homemaker. Together they raised four children in a house that always bustled with friends and activity. She was gifted with a beautiful soprano voice but chose motherhood over a career in light opera and was often invited to sing at community social events and church.

Jan’s life was transformed when she became a Christian at the age of 35. Even 50 years later, she wept tears of joy when recounting the experience and the gift Jesus gave her.

Jan retired with Tom to Sonora in 1987, but her life never slowed down. With an infinite capacity for love, she blessed her family and community, and was considered “Mom” by multitudes of people who experienced through her the steadfast love of a mother, and the patient guidance of a mentor. She loved, lived and proclaimed biblical truth and freedom, and shared it enthusiastically with everyone. Jan was fiercely patriotic, passionately loved America and fervently prayed for God’s kingdom to transform this nation.

She was predeceased by Thomas, her husband of 55 years; daughter, Joyce Pfeiffer; son-in-law, Gary Pfeiffer; her parents, Stewart and Bernice Warner; and siblings, Patricia, Phyllis and Burton.

Jan is survived by her children, Jill (Gary) Fenati, Tom (Donna) Higgins and Joan (Kenn) Gulliksen; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mother Lode Christian School, 18393 Gardner Ave., Tuolumne, CA 95379.
