Lela Arnetta Marshall was born in Kansas on Dec. 16, 1928. Her family moved to Melones when she was in the second grade. She began school there, but later attended the “new” grammar school in Columbia. She graduated from Sonora High School in 1945.

Lela married her high school sweetheart, Robert “Bob” Marshall, at the age of 16. Together they raised their daughters in Columbia, Camp 9 and Escalon, finally returning to Sonora in 1963, to build their lifelong home. Bob and Lela were married for 52 years.

Lela’s first job while in high school was at Nelson’s Candy Store in Columbia. Over the years she also worked at Pitts Studio, Bank of America, Wolfe Drug Store, and Yosemite Title Company.

Lela enjoyed quilting and shopping for collectibles at flea markets. She loved spending time at the family cabin at Eagle Meadows, picnics at Kennedy Meadows and horseback riding trips to the Emigrant Basin. She accompanied Bob on hunting trips to Colorado, Idaho and Montana.

Lela was committed to her family and will be forever loved and missed by all.

She is survived by her daughters, Lynda (Norbert) Johnson, of Columbia, Randi (Ken) Michelson, of Loomis, and Terry (Terry) Graham, of San Mateo; nine grandchildren, Lynn Kellogg, of Citrus Heights, Ingrid Adams, of San Diego, Robert Johnson, of Columbia, Brian Johnson, of Sonora, Brandon Worthington, of Okinawa, Kristina Bettati, of Carmichael, Samantha Graham, of Walnut Creek, and Tyler and Sarah Graham, of San Mateo; and 19 great grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Sonora Elks Lodge, 100 Elk Drive in Sonora.
