Carolee Anne Hodges, age 83, passed away peacefully at home under hospice care. Born in Oakland to William and Cecile Lindauer, she graduated from Hayward High School in 1951. She also attended Samuel Merritt School of Nursing and graduated as an R.N.

Carolee met her future husband, Jim, in October 1953 in Berkeley. She and Jim hit it off and went on a date the following week. Soon they were going steady then engaged and married Sept. 5, 1954. She graduated nursing college, and Jim started his junior year at Cal. Carolee worked at Merritt Hospital, then at a doctor's' office while Jim worked close to campus. After Jim’s graduation, he began his career at a computer company, and they bought their first house in the Berkeley hills.

A year later Jim went on active duty as a 2nd lieutenant in the Army, and Carolee accompanied him to Oklahoma, then to Monterey. They returned to Berkeley and their jobs. Their son, Douglas, was born in 1959 and they moved to larger home in the Oakland Hills. Their daughter, Dayna, was born. Carolee was very active in Children's Home Society and PTA. .

Jim's job sometimes took him to other locations for a few days, and Carolee was able to join him in Hawaii, Bermuda, Jamaica, Mexico and U.S. cities. After a week on a friend’s 73-foot charter sailboat in the Virgin Islands they were hooked and bought a sailboat. The next 25 years it became a family affair, growing into larger boats. Carolee crewed for races and cruised off the coast and in the Bay and Delta.

They chartered sailboats with sailing friends in the Caribbean, Mexico, Tahiti and Australia. Other great vacations were in Australia, where they visited Perth (Jim's birthplace), spent time on Lizard Island in Queensland and snorkeled on the Great Barrier Reef. Another trip included crossing from Sydney to Perth by train and more sailing.

They retired in 1994 and moved to Sonora in 1995. They did more traveling but mostly enjoyed living in the foothills and making new friends, joining local clubs and organizations.

Carolee is survived by her husband of 63 years; three children; four grandchildren, William, Evan, Ashley and Robert; and one great-grandchild, Dante.

There will be no services per Carolee's request.
