Sonora Pass opens

Keith Shotts, 60, of Bakersfield, left, and Scot Buell, 62, of Coleville, prepare to descend from the top of Sonora Pass Friday. The two friends used their 22-speed road cycles to climb Sonora Pass from the east side in Mono County down to Kennedy Meadows in Tuolumne County, then back up over Sonora Pass and down again to Sonora Junction.

Caltrans workers on both sides of the central Sierra Nevada mountain range opened Sonora Pass on Highway 108 and Ebbetts Pass on Highway 4 on Friday morning, a spokesperson for the state transportation agency said before 10:30 a.m.

Both passes were open as of 10 a.m. Sonora Pass at 9,624 feet above sea level, and Ebbetts Pass at 8,730 feet, have been closed for the winter since Nov. 27.
