People at Don Pedro Reservoir helped save a 21-year-old man who almost drowned near the Moccasin boat ramps Sunday.

The man was in stable condition at a hospital more than 18 hours after the incident Sunday afternoon, Tuolumne County Sheriff’s staff said.

Friends and other people saw the man having trouble in the water Sunday afternoon. Witnesses said he was swimming, went under water and didn’t resurface. People went in the water, pulled him to safety and started doing cardiopulmonary resuscitation to revive him.

Boating division deputies were alerted to the man having trouble in the water just after 5 p.m. Sunday. They helped pull the 21-year-old man the remainder of the way to shore and checked his vitals for more than 10 minutes before the first medical professionals arrived, Deputy Niccoli Sandelin with the Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday morning.

A helicopter ambulance crew came and flew the man to a hospital in another county for more treatment.

“The victim, as of yesterday, was recovering and in stable condition,” Sandelin said Tuesday.
