The Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 to dismiss County Health Officer Dr. Bob Bernstein in closed session at a special meeting on Wednesday.
Bernstein, who was hired in March 2018, said he was in a “total shock” about the unanimous decision to let him go. He says he was told in January that he could resign or be dismissed, but wasn’t given a reason why.
In a press release, the county stated it would not be providing any further comments on the matter because legally prohibited from releasing information on confidential personnel matters.
County Supervisor Ryan Campbell, who seconded the motion to dismiss Bernstein, also declined to comment.
Bernstein moved from Georgia with his three children to take the job with the county. His past work experience includes more than 24 years with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a medical epidemiologist and program officer.
