A California Highway Patrol officer pursuing a motorcycle driving at high speed on Wednesday evening later came upon the driver and found him dead from a suspected solo-vehicle accident.
A 2021 Yamaha R1 driven by Gary Steven Ribeira Jr., 47, of Turlock, was found off of Highway 4, west of Horseshoe Road, at 5:51 p.m., according to a press release from the CHP San Andreas-area office.
A CHP officer was driving eastbound on Highway 4 near Copperopolis and noticed the motorcycle traveling westbound at an "extremely" high rate of speed, the press release stated.
The officer made a U-turn and attempted to follow it for an enforcement stop, but lost sight of it. After rounding a corner, the officer saw a cloud of dust and located the motorcycle and Ribeira.
The CHP San Andreas-area office is requesting information from the public about anyone who may have witnessed the crash or been passed by the motorcycle. The office can be reached at (209) 754-3541.
Neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be factors in the crash, the release stated.
