The driver of a 1990 Chevrolet Corvette lost control in a curve on Highway 26, the hardtop sports car overturned and ejected him and his passenger, and they were both injured so badly two helicopter crews came to life-flight them to hospitals in Sacramento and Modesto, CHP San Andreas personnel said Wednesday.
The crash occurred about 9:50 p.m. Tuesday on Highway 26 east of Quail Oaks Road in the Valley Springs area, Officer E. M. Parsons with the California Highway Patrol said.
Brandon D. Maggard, 34, of Rio Linda north of Sacramento, was driving his Corvette west, came to a curve in the road, allowed the vehicle to go in the eastbound lane, and lost control of the Corvette, a CHP investigating officer said.
The Corvette went back in the westbound lane out of control, off the north side of the road onto the shoulder, and overturned, ejecting Maggard and his passenger, Katie J. Thompson, 32, of Valley Springs. The car came to rest on its roof in a grass field.
Maggard was flown to Kaiser South Sacramento and Thompson was flown to Modesto Memorial Medical Center.
Alcohol appeared to be a contributing factor in this traffic collision, a CHP investigating officer said. Maggard was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence.
Hospital staff in Sacramento and Modesto confirmed Wednesday that Maggard and Thompson had sustained major injuries in the Corvette crash, Parsons with CHP San Andreas said.
