Two motorcyclists crashed head-on Monday afternoon on Highway 49 north of Schilling Road in Coulterville and were taken by helicoptered to separate hospitals in Modesto with major injuries, a California Highway Patrol officer in Jamestown said.
The crash occurred about 2:10 p.m. Monday on Highway 49.
Selina Granados, 37, of Merced, was riding a 2019 Honda street bike north on Highway 49, while John Canavan, 59, of Cool in El Dorado County, was riding a 2018 dual-sport BMW motorcycle south. They were both doing 30 to 35 miles per hour as they approached each other, according to the CHP.
Granados was approaching a curve in the road and allowed her motorcycle to drift over the double-yellow lines, directly into the path of Canavan’s motorcycle, the CHP said. The motorcyclists then struck each other head-on and were thrown off their motorbikes into the road.
By the time a CHP officer arrived at the crash scene, the injured motorcyclists and their motorcycles were moved off the road, CHP Officer Steve Machado said in a phone interview.
Granados was flown by helicopter to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, while Canavan was flown by helicopter to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.
Machado said the CHP officer who handled the crash had not returned to Jamestown as of 5 p.m. Monday.
Both motorcyclists were wearing helmets. Alcohol and drugs were not factors in the crash, Machado said, and no citations were issued.
