Angels Camp City Council set a curfew for Friday night in anticipation of a Black Lives Matter protest this afternoon.
The curfew begins at 8:30 p.m. and extends until 5 a.m. Saturday. The council gave the police chief and city administrator the authority to extend it.
A protest organized by two teenagers was scheduled for this afternoon and then cancelled due to threats made against them. But others decided to meet downtown at 3 p.m. anyway.
Angels Camp Police Department posted on Facebook, "We support the right to free speech and peaceful demonstration and will work to provide a safe place for everyone's voice to be heard. Help us keep the demonstrations peaceful by promptly reporting any situation, or potential situation, that may threaten life and/or property."
The department said other agencies would be called in for assistance.
"We expect the demonstrations to remain peaceful and are ready to address any unforeseen circumstances that may arise," the post said.
Another protest is scheduled in Angels Camp for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
