A man was caught on camera taking a package from a Copperopolis-area resident’s porch Wednesday, and Calaveras County deputies are seeking the suspect and his vehicle.

The porch theft was reported to the Sheriff”s Office about 10:20 a.m. Wednesday at an undisclosed location in the Copperopolis area.

Deputies went out to the home and got security camera images that showed a man in a vehicle come on the property and take the package off the porch, Sgt. Greg Stark with the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office said.

A search for the suspect and his vehicle turned up nothing. Deputies released images of the suspect and his vehicle and asked the public to help identify the man. Tipsters can call (209) 754-6030 and they can remain anonymous.

Although the security camera did not prevent the Wednesday porch theft, the Sheriff’s Office still recommends residents install security cameras or video doorbell devices to help prevent these types of crimes.

Visible security cameras can help deter criminals, sheriff’s staff said. Some security cameras can allow people to monitor alerts and activations on their mobile devices. Other ways to prevent porch thefts include coordinating with neighbors to accept or collect packages, requiring signatures or sign up for tracking alerts, and having packages delivered to work addresses, not home addresses.
