A Sonora High School student’s proposed mural on the side of a flower shop in downtown Sonora was unanimously approved by the city’s Planning Commission at a public meeting Monday night.

The floral mural will be painted on the south-facing wall of Sonora Florist and Gifts at 35 S. Washington St. by aspiring artist Christine Yang, a foreign-exchange student from Fujian, China, for her senior project.

Yang’s proposal received broad support from members of the community who spoke to the commission, though it had faced opposition from a local group dedicated to historic preservation.
