The body of an unidentified man was found near railroad tracks in the area of South Washington Street on Monday.
An autopsy is underway through the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Coroner to determine the identity of the man and the cause of death, said a press release from the Sonora Police Department.
The level of decomposition indicated the person was there for a period of time, the release said. The body was found by an employee of a nearby business who was conducting a routine property check.
Foul play has not been ruled out.
The discovery of the body follows after the discovery of a dead body in late July on a deck behind the Tuolumne County Senior Center. At the time, the Sonora Police Department told The Union Democrat next of kin had not been located or identified and the cause of death was still pending.
