Cathie Peacock

Cathie Peacock holds up a plaque with the names of Tuolumne County centenarians while honoring them at the Tuolumne County Commission on Aging's Centenarian Honors Luncheon in 2019. The commission is seeking nominees for this year's honors, though an in-person event will not be held due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Tuolumne County Commission on Aging is seeking the names of noteworthy local seniors aged 90 or older for recognition at the yearly Centenarian Honors event. Nominations must be received by 5 p.m., Nov. 30.

The annual luncheon, normally held at the Tuolumne County Senior Center, will not be held for the second year in a row due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Cathie Peacock, COA treasurer, who noted that the health and safety of everyone in the community was of vital importance.

The Centenarian Honors event seeks to honor seniors over 90 for their contributions of wisdom, work ethic, military service and their dedication to family and community.

Each honoree will receive an invitation by telephone and by mail explaining the event, as well as a packet delivered directly to them by community leaders, dignitaries, law enforcement, representatives from the county Board of Supervisors and the COA. The packet will include a program listing all honorees, a “fun fact” sheet about what went on 100 years ago, and their own certificate of acknowledgment and Honor.

Those aged 90 to 95 will be recognized as centenarians-in-training. Seniors aged 96 will be recognized as freshmen; 97-year-olds recognized as sophomores; 98-year-olds as juniors and 99-year-olds as seniors in the county’s “University of Life.”

Anyone 100 will be inducted into the Centenarian Society and those over 100 will be recognized in the county’s Centenarian Alumni Association.

The Commission on Aging advises the county Board of Supervisors, supports, and advocates on any or all matters affecting the aging in Tuolumne County. The activities of the COA can involve planning, special studies, promotion and advocacy.
