A Tuolumne County man died on Sunday night on Lyons Bald Mountain Road after his vehicle ran off the road and crashed into a tree while airborne.
The California Highway Patrol - Sonora Area has identified the driver only as a 40-year-old man from Sonora.
According to a California Highway Patrol press release, the man was driving a 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck westbound on Lyons Bald Mountain Road and east of Apple Valley Drive at about 10:35 p.m. Sunday at an unknown, but high rate of speed.
The truck left the north side of the road and was ramped by large rocks along the shoulder. The vehicle crashed into a tree and came to rest on its wheels.
Officer Josh McKernan with the California Highway Patrol said it did not appear there were any witnesses.
McKernan said the man was not wearing a seatbelt. According to the press release, he was pinned in the driver’s seat and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The cause of the collision is under investigation.
The press release also said alcohol may have been a factor.
