A 23-year-old Sonora man stabbed himself in the abdomen with a kitchen knife after allegedly attacking and attempting to strangle his mother on Saturday in the Fallview Drive home that they shared.

The mother told authorities her son was upset because she took away his guns.

Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Andrea Benson said when deputies responded to the home at approximately 2:24 a.m. on Saturday morning, they confronted the man, outside of the home. His abdomen was bloody and he had a knife in his hand.

A deputy yelled for the man to drop the knife, which he initially refused and after subsequent commands dropped it, Benson said.

Investigators learned the man attacked his mother after they had an argument. Benson said the man was upset with his mother, but she did not know if he had any conditions or a history of mental illness.

According to a Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office press release, the victim called law enforcement to report her son was attempting to kill her.

Deputies found the woman hiding in the bathroom. She had red marks on her throat and on the left side of her jaw, Benson said. The woman also had red eyes, a raspy voice, pain in her throat and swelling on her face.

The victim told deputies her son brandished the knife and threatened a murder-suicide.

She called law enforcement while hiding in the bathroom.

Benson said Matthew Rose, 23, was transferred to a hospital in Modesto to be treated for the stab wound.

Benson said he will be transferred to the Tuolumne County Jail once he was deemed medically cleared, but she did not know when that would be.

Rose was charged with attempted homicide and criminal threats. He does not have a current booking photo because he has not yet been processed through the jail.

Fallview Drive is located in the Crystal Falls subdivision of Sonora.
