The Tuolumne County Search and Rescue team was called to Aspen Meadows Tuesday night to find two of four hikers.

One of the men, who the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office identified only as Jose, hurt his leg and two of the friends hiked to the Aspen Meadows Pack Station in Pinecrest for help. The man who stayed behind with Jose left for help as time wore on.

Searchers found Jose just before midnight then set out in search of the fourth man. They were all dressed in shorts and t-shirts, thinking it was a simple day hike.

“Medical personnel on the team worked on Jose who was close to hypothermia,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. “The team helped hydrate and warm him.”

Using trekking poles, Jose was able hike to Aspen Meadows with the SAR team.

The fourth friend was found sometime later.

“ It wasn’t quite the adventure this group expected, but we’re glad they’re all doing well today,” the news release said.

And they’re offering this advice: pack water, food, and appropriate clothing “in case your trip lasts longer than expected.”
