The man shot to death at Deadman Campground was arrested in San Mateo two years to the day for indecent exposure, annoying or molesting a minor, and attempted kidnapping.
Sgt. Andrea Benson of the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office said in an email, Timothy Smith tried to get into a tent occupied by children at a state park campground. The parents confronted him and he was arrested.
He pleaded guilty to a charge of engaging in lewd conduct in public.
“The circumstances between these two cases were found to be eerily similar,” Benson said.
She said no one has been arrested, and the case is closed. The results of the investigation will be sent to the District Attorney’s office for review.
On July 11, Smith went into a tent occupied by a sleeping man and a woman around 2 a.m. The couple told authorities when the woman woke up, the man was on top of her. She screamed to wake up her boyfriend, who was beside her. During a subsequent struggle, Smith of Watsonville was shot.
