The sounds of beating drums echoed across the Columbia Elementary School campus and into the parking lot as the Gold Country Music Day Camp drumline practiced Wednesday afternoon. Eighty Tuolumne County school students grades six through nine signed up this year for the week-long camp that “is organized to challenge and entertain students in a variety of creative pursuits” says camp director Yvonne Denton.

Other electives offered are jazz band, ukulele, brass ensemble, flute ensemble and many others.

Students participating in the Glee elective sang and danced on the amphitheater stage, waving their arms and kicking their legs.

“The curriculum of the camp includes instrumental techniques, large and small ensemble, music theory, Jazz Band, Choir and more and taught by local musicians and educators” says Denton. The week long camp culminates in a concert performance by the students Friday night in the school gym.
